Stanford University President John Hennessy and Morris Chang, founding chairman of TSMC, talk about how Japan fell behind Taiwan, China and Korea in the semiconductor industry. Chang attributes this to the lack of Japanese “fabless manufacturers,” chip makers without fabrication facilities.
